IACUC Tip of the Month

The IACUC re-reviews all existing Policies and Standard Procedures on a triennial basis
During its most recent meetings the IACUC approved updates to the following Policies and Standard Procedures (found in the eIACUC Library and in the eIACUC protocol form):
Policies:
Modifications to an Animal Research Protocol
- Added definitions
- Updated language to ensure VVC is approved only when there is no increase in pain or distress and that all changes are approved in a pre-existing IACUC-approved policy, guidance document, formulary, standard procedure, or consistent with standards of veterinary practice
- Updated references
Flooring for Rodents (Grid or Wire Mesh)
- Added definitions
- A description of how animals will be monitored for adverse complications must be specified in the IACUC protocol
Food or Fluid Regulation and Manipulation of Feed Composition
- Added definitions & reference
- Clarifications to Scope
- Policy statement adds “The use of a highly preferred food or fluid as positive reinforcement, as an alternative to restriction, is recommended when applicable.”
- Reorganized Procedures section & removed unnecessary verbiage.
- Deviation from Humane Endpoints policy must be described in IACUC protocol.
