IACUC Tip of the Month

With AAALAC coming to the Marquam Hill and South Waterfront Campuses for its triennial site visit June 29 – July 1, the IACUC would like to remind animal users of these recent changes to its policies. Please review the policies that are applicable to your work to ensure they are being followed (IACUC policy manual).

• Neuromuscular Blocking Agent Use in Animals 
  • Requirements for neuromuscular agent use in fish 
  • Clarifies use of reversal agents 
• Sterility of Surgical Instruments and other Medical Materials 
  • Date of sterilization and/or expiration (incl day, month, and year) must be indicated on outer packaging.  
• Blood Collection from Animals Used in Research or Teaching 
  • Directs users to campus-specific DCM for required training for restraint and blood collection
• Tumor Burden in Mice and Rats; Spontaneous or Induced Solid Tumors 
  • Monitoring plan should include enhanced frequency of monitoring when piloting and initiating work with new or modified cell lines, genotypes, and/or routes of inoculation. 
  • Clarified that if any parameters are exceeded in part V without IACUC approval, euthanasia must occur.  
• Prolonged Restraint 
  • Clarified language regarding acclimation procedures, monitoring and endpoint criteria required to be in IACUC protocol 
  • Clarified requirements for veterinary care 

The IACUC re-reviews all existing Policies and Standard Procedures on a triennial basis 

During its most recent meetings the IACUC approved updates to the following Policies and Standard Procedures (linked in the eIACUC protocol form):

• Transport of Live Animals by Principal Investigators 

• 3-year update 

• Reorganization to remove redundant language 

• Links to DCM SOPs added in references 

• Humane Intervention and Endpoints for Laboratory Animals 

• Procedure VII better aligns with Tumor Burden policy 

• Figures of grimace scales incorporated for applicable species 

• Discussion of species-specific indicators of pain included in Procedure VIII C 

• Clarification of weight loss parameters in Procedure VIII D
